Against Scientific Eras: From AI Hype to Negotiated Intelligence
I’ve lived through enough “eras” to be suspicious of them.
The Information Age.
The Genomic Era.
The Big Data Revolution.
Now we are told we are entering the “fifth era of science”—AI-driven, inevitable, transformative.
I don’t doubt the science behind the current moment. I build with it. I argue against magical thinking in AI as much as anyone.
But I reject the framing.
Not because it’s entirely wrong—but because it quietly redefines reality in order to coordinate behavior.
The Problem with “Era Thinking”
“Era” language presents itself as descriptive. It is not. It is prescriptive.
When someone says:
“We are entering the fifth era of science…”
they are not reporting a discovery. They are organizing a narrative.
That narrative does three things:
1. It compresses disagreement
Science is not moving in lockstep. Wet labs, field sciences, theory, and engineering all operate under different constraints. There is no clean boundary between “before” and “after.”
2. It manufactures inevitability
It implies direction: this is happening, adapt or fall behind.
That’s not a scientific claim. That’s momentum rhetoric.
3. It reassigns authority
If this is a new era, then some expertise becomes “legacy,” and other expertise becomes “future.”
That’s a power shift, whether acknowledged or not.
This is why era framing feels like political theatre with a lab coat.
Because it is.
Real Science, Wrapped in Strategy
The underlying science is not the problem.
- AI systems require domain-specific tuning
- Human expertise remains essential
- Data quality and model alignment are now central bottlenecks
These are valid, grounded observations.
But when assembled into an “era,” they become something else:
a coordination signal for institutions
That signal influences:
- funding flows
- research priorities
- hiring pipelines
- definitions of relevance
This is not deception. It is strategic simplification with consequences.
A Category Error in Action
I recently had to point out to Gemini that calling X3D a “legacy language” is a category error.
X3D is:
- an open ISO standard
- still functional
- still appropriate for real-time 3D systems
“Legacy” in that context doesn’t describe capability. It signals alignment with a narrative about what counts as modern.
That’s what era framing does at scale.
It doesn’t just describe the world.
It reclassifies it.
What’s Actually Happening
We are not entering a new era.
We are experiencing a shift in bottlenecks within a layered system.
Science has always been plural:
- empirical observation
- theoretical modeling
- computational simulation
- data-driven analysis
- AI-assisted inference
These are not sequential phases. They are coexisting regimes.
What changes is not the era—but the location of friction:
- data curation
- interpretability
- alignment between models and reality
This is a systems problem, not a historical epoch.
The Missing Piece: Interaction
Here is where the “era” model breaks down completely.
It assumes that progress comes from dominant paradigms replacing weaker ones.
But in practice, especially in complex systems, progress emerges from:
interaction between heterogeneous agents under constraint
This includes:
- humans
- models
- datasets
- environments
- institutions
None of these dominates consistently.
They negotiate.
From Eras to Negotiated Intelligence
A more accurate model is not historical—it is relational.
Instead of:
Era 1 → Era 2 → Era 3 → Era 4 → Era 5
we have:
dynamic systems negotiating meaning, constraint, and outcome
In this view:
- AI is not an “era-defining force”
- It is a participant in a multi-agent system
- Intelligence emerges from interaction, not replacement
This is the foundation of what I would call negotiated intelligence:
Systems in which models, humans, and environments continuously adjust to each other under explicit and implicit constraints.
Why This Matters Architecturally
If you adopt “era thinking,” you tend toward:
- monoculture (one dominant model)
- centralization (few actors defining truth)
- brittle systems (overfitted to current paradigms)
If you adopt negotiated intelligence, you design for:
- heterogeneity
- adaptability
- verifiable interaction
- distributed authority
In other words:
resilient systems instead of fashionable ones
A Better Question
Instead of asking:
“What era are we in?”
we should ask:
“Where is the bottleneck, and how do interacting agents negotiate through it?”
That question:
- preserves scientific plurality
- respects domain expertise
- avoids premature obsolescence
It is harder to package.
But it is closer to reality.
Final Thought
“Fifth era of science” is not a discovery.
It is a coordination signal.
And coordination signals are powerful:
- they shape institutions
- they redirect resources
- they redefine legitimacy
But they are never neutral.
If we mistake them for science itself, we risk building systems that optimize for the narrative rather than the world.
And the world does not care what era we think we’re in.
It responds only to how well we negotiate with it.
