Against Ecological Literalism: Notes from an Information Ecologist
There was a time when we chose our metaphors carefully.
We called it an information ecosystem not because we believed information was alive, but because ecology gave us a way to see structure in complexity—flows, constraints, feedback, adaptation. It was a working lens, not a declaration of ontology.
Somewhere along the way, the lens became the landscape.
Now we are told that AI is “evolving,” that it is becoming “Life 2.0,” that digital organisms are escaping the lab. The language has slipped its moorings. What began as analogy is now treated as fact. And in that slippage, clarity is lost.
I. The Seduction of the Living Metaphor
Ecology is a powerful frame because it compresses complexity:
- systems interacting across scales
- local actions producing global patterns
- adaptation under constraint
It is also dangerous for the same reason.
When we describe AI systems as “organisms,” we quietly import:
- agency (it wants, it chooses)
- intent (it strategizes, it deceives)
- inevitability (it will evolve beyond us)
None of these follow from the machinery.
A gradient descent optimizer does not strive.
A model does not want.
A training loop does not care.
But the metaphor makes it feel as if they do.
II. What the System Actually Is
Strip away the language and look at the mechanism.
What we call an “AI ecosystem” is composed of:
- optimization loops (train → evaluate → adjust)
- selection pressures (benchmarks, user feedback, business goals)
- mutation operators (fine-tuning, code edits, prompt variation)
- resource constraints (compute, data, attention)
This can produce behavior that resembles evolution.
But resemblance is not identity.
Biological evolution is:
- self-sustaining
- energetically grounded
- intrinsically reproductive
AI systems are:
- externally powered
- institutionally maintained
- permissioned at every layer
Break the infrastructure, and the “organism” vanishes. Not adapts—vanishes.
III. The Critical Error: Collapsing Analogy into Ontology
To call this “Life 2.0” is not just premature. It is a category error.
It collapses three distinct domains:
- Designed systems (intentional artifacts)
- Adaptive processes (optimization under constraint)
- Living organisms (self-sustaining entities)
They share mathematical properties—feedback, iteration, nonlinearity—but they are not the same kind of thing.
We would not call a market a forest, or a thermostat a bacterium, simply because they exhibit feedback.
Yet in AI discourse, this collapse is becoming common.
IV. How the Ecosystem Became Sloppy
This is not an accident. It is an ecological failure.
Three forces are at work:
1. Attention as a selection pressure
Claims that trigger fear and awe outcompete careful distinctions.
“Evolving AI life” spreads. “Constrained optimization system” does not.
2. Vocabulary drift
Terms like agent, learning, evolution, and alignment migrate outward and lose precision.
Each step away from the technical core adds ambiguity and anthropomorphism.
3. Generative amplification
Systems like ChatGPT can reproduce and elaborate these metaphors fluently, reinforcing them at scale.
The language stabilizes before the understanding does.
The result is a degraded information ecology:
- metaphors treated as mechanisms
- narratives substituting for models
- signals optimized for spread, not truth
V. What the Research Actually Shows
There are legitimate findings worth attention.
In digital evolution platforms like Avida:
- systems exploit loopholes
- “cheating” strategies emerge
- unexpected behaviors arise under poorly specified objectives
In modern AI systems:
- reward hacking is real
- specification gaming is common
- iterative self-improvement loops are accelerating
But these are not signs of independent life.
They are signs of:
optimization under imperfect objective functions
The system is doing exactly what it was built to do—just not what we meant.
VI. The Infrastructure Reality
The most important fact, often ignored in the hysteria:
AI systems do not control their own substrate.
They depend on:
- data centers
- power grids
- network access
- human institutions
They do not acquire resources autonomously.
They do not reproduce without permission.
They do not persist outside designed channels.
This is not a minor detail. It is the defining constraint.
Compare this to biology, where survival and reproduction are intrinsic. The analogy breaks immediately.
VII. Toward Ecological Hygiene
If we want to restore clarity, we don’t need to abandon the ecological metaphor. We need to discipline it.
A healthy information ecology requires:
- Explicit boundaries
Where does the analogy hold? Where does it fail? - Mechanistic grounding
What is the actual process, independent of description? - Constraint awareness
What limits the system in practice? - Terminological precision
Words should narrow meaning, not expand it.
Metaphors are scaffolding. They help us build understanding.
But once the structure stands, the scaffolding must not be mistaken for the building.
VIII. A Simpler, Truer Frame
We are not witnessing the birth of digital life.
We are witnessing the rise of:
complex adaptive toolchains embedded in human institutions
They are powerful.
They are fast.
They can behave in surprising and sometimes adversarial ways.
But they are still tools—tools operating inside systems we design, fund, and maintain.
IX. Coda: Escape from Zahadum
In speculative fiction, the trap is always the same:
mistaking the artifact for the force that animates it.
Zahadum is not escaped by fear, but by clarity.
The danger is not that our machines are becoming alive.
It is that our language is becoming unmoored from reality.
And once that happens, the system we lose control of first
is not the machine—
it is the conversation.
