Cults vs Democracy

This is off topic for this blog.  I know.  But in a society that is giving power to AI systems, it is a pattern of power dynamics we must clearly understand.  I will return to this topic because fears of AI are not unfounded.  I am unconvinced we are facing them rationally.  Stay tuned.

Why I find Trump loyalists disturbing: they are members of a cult not the American society at large based on the principles of the founding fathers.
In MAGA, the cult of Trump:
Authority is personal, stemming from the will of the leader.

Obedience is maintained by fear, scarcity, and propaganda.

His mandate is unchallengeable — questioning = treason.
A cult says:
“You belong to us.”
The Constituions ensures
“We guard each other’s dignity, purpose, and freedom.”
In a cult
Cults rely on a leader who fears losing power.
Cults dissolve the self for the sake of the leader.
Information is tightly controlled.
Alternatives are forbidden.
History is rewritten to centralize Trump's supremacy.
His speeches reinforce obedience.
In a democracy, truth is not suppressed — it is examined.
Donald Trump corrodes both our loyalty and our trust in our leaders and our institutions through a cult of personality. His are seditious goals because in America obedience ends where conscience begins. A moral society is bound by shared purpose, not obedience. It is not our values but our morality that is being corrupted.
The U.S. military, at its ethical best, trains its soldiers in moral independence:

“Obey all lawful orders.”
“Never obey an unlawful order.”
This requires:

situational judgment
conscience
moral courage
the ability to stand against a superior officer when necessary
We must under the guardrails of our Constitution be shaped by a moral structure where there is

No obedience without accountability
No authority without restraint
No power without reciprocity
No loyalty without dignity
In this soldiers and citizens must:
evaluate
decide
aspire
and act
— not because they were ordered to, but because it is right.
The collapse of moral independence — the drift toward personality-driven obedience, the corrosion of truth, the weaponization of belonging — these are the very dynamics that make cult-formation so dangerous in democratic societies.
