MCCF Gesture Constellation Design Proposal



Extend the current EBPS-driven gesture system from discrete gesture activation toward fuzzy, loosely coupled behavioral expression.

Design principle

EBPS describes the state space.
Gestures provide the behavioral vocabulary.
Constellations provide expressive combinations.
Character determines how the vocabulary is spoken.


1. Independent EBPS activation ranges

Each gesture should have an independent activation range for each EBPS dimension rather than requiring an exact EBPS value.

A gesture therefore occupies a region of EBPS state space:

Gesture: skeptical_head_tilt

E:  .45–.75
B:  .10–.35
P:  .55–.85
S:  .40–.70

Entering the region increases the likelihood/intensity of the gesture rather than creating a binary on/off condition.

2. Gesture constellations

Introduce gesture constellations as sets of gestures associated with a mood or behavioral state.

A constellation should specify tendencies, weights, or preferred intensities rather than rigid choreography.

For example:

Mood: Curious

eyebrow_raise     strong
head_tilt         medium
eye_focus         strong
hand_open         medium
lean_forward      slight
smile              slight

Multiple gestures may therefore become active simultaneously as the current EBPS state moves through their respective ranges.

3. Character-specific expression

Keep mood, EBPS state, and character expression loosely coupled.

The same mood should not necessarily produce the same constellation for every character.

Character profiles can bias gesture selection, intensity, timing, and combinations.

Thus:

same mood + different character → different expression

and potentially:

same mood + same character + different context → different expression.

4. Dynamic rather than deterministic behavior

Treat EBPS ranges and constellation weights as probabilistic biases, not hard rules.

Conceptually:

Mood
  ↓
Constellation bias
  ↓
EBPS state modifies activation
  ↓
Character modifies expression
  ↓
Context perturbs selection
  ↓
Actual gesture/face animation

The objective is dynamic range and individual character, rather than deterministic animation lookup.

5. Observable gesture state

Treat the simultaneous set of active gestures at an event as a gesture constellation—an observable behavioral state in its own right.

Do not require the constellation to map back to a single EBPS value.

A constellation such as:

raised eyebrow
head tilt
focused eyes
brief pause
reduced body movement

may be perceived as skepticaluncertain, or questioning even though no single EBPS vector uniquely describes it.

This creates the possibility of a future perception loop:

internal state → gesture constellation → perceived state

The observer's interpretation can be tested independently of the author's intended EBPS state.

Keep the coupling fuzzy enough that the system can produce variation without losing semantic coherence.
